Since then, I am convinced that education and health care have a strong impact on reducing the incidence of disease. They give us new opportunities to live our lives within the reach of the best medical skills and the latest technology available. I am proud that The International Conference of Police Chaplains has developed such an excellent educational program specifically geared to law enforcement personnel. The American Police Chaplain Association (APA) and the Center for Policing Equity (COPE) have teamed up to launch the National Police Chaplain Professional Development Award. Their mission is to promote professional development by providing support for officers who want to obtain their Master of Criminal Justice (M.C.J.) degree. This award will be given to an outstanding officer who demonstrates outstanding leadership, excellent classroom instruction, exemplary service, and an understanding of community policing. This program, while an important step toward recognizing exceptional leadership, should not be confused with any of what is known as “pay-for-performance.” This is simply a recognition of exemplary leadership and the application of lessons learned to better serve our constituents, especially those who are law enforcement officers, at large school districts, and at our own conferences in the United States and abroad. This recognition of leadership and knowledge of community policing by officers at our conferences, both in the United States and abroad, is one result of the CPC Journal. I am proud that this publication of the International Conference of Police Chaplains is a part of this award and of our collaboration with the APA. Our goal is to continue to provide our law enforcement officers with a means of obtaining an M.C.J. Degree by providing them with quality training that is highly relevant to their daily work. This work at the present time is a tremendous responsibility as it relates to our communities and our officers. We believe that this program provides officers as well as our community, a means of developing that leadership that will ensure the welfare of all. I want to thank John Vines, president of COPE for his assistance in assisting in this endeavor. Our police officers are a valuable resource for local and international communities who have a need for trained leadership, support, and advice, and that our service members are a valued component of the communities that they serve.
