Representatives from the International Joint Agency for Research on Cancer (ARC), the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (ARC), the European Food Safety Authority, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer convened the meeting. E. van de Place reported that the meeting was the ninth meeting in the series organized by the TM 2010 and that the meeting was designed to stimulate discussion and analysis of new information on carcinogens and to assist in planning future meetings. He welcomed the participants to the TM. He emphasized that the objective of the meeting was to generate the best possible guidance for use, evaluation and control of substances and to provide a framework for further research, policy development and evaluation. The meeting was also intended to address the question of the best way of implementing and/or planning the current system of action plans for the global effort against cancer. A number of new topics were reviewed and discussed to address specific situations, such as tobacco, asbestos, benzene, humane, chloroform and dimethyl methylphosphonothioate in food and other industries, and to develop new instruments, standards and mechanisms for the surveillance of exposures to chemicals. Specific items of the agenda included: A description of the key principles, priorities, and issues for consideration during the next meeting. It is proposed that the meeting will continue to adopt this document into the next meeting, in accordance with the current standard schedule (STAB) for meeting procedures for the next meeting of the TM. A general description of the process by which the next meeting will proceed. A new and updated list of agenda items, and a list of participants (including invited scientific experts).
