The goal was to discover an antifungal agent with both bactericidal activity and an antibacterial activity. This agent could act as a substitute for drugs in the treatment of infections or even as a preventive measure in patients with a high risk of infection. Previous antifungal agents used for the treatment of fungal infections have been used at the concentrations needed for therapeutic effects and have limited bactericidal action. The ability to produce high pH and decreased expression of bacteria on yeasts, the inability to induce bactericidal action, and the ability to inhibit growth of the yeasts have made the use of such agents difficult. The problem of producing the low levels of antibacterial activity required for antibacterial activity has hampered earlier research in this area. Previous antifungal agents that have been used have been of limited use because of their bactericidal activities; and some older agents had side effects, particularly respiratory problems or toxic side effects.
