The Historical Association's President Paul S. Mullins joined with President and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld for a short pre-visit talk to the Association's membership; a reception followed at the President s Residence. President Mullins opened by thanking members for making this a memorable visit to the Association. After the pre-visit talks, the Association hosted its annual Meet the Presidents' Day celebration, with participants enjoying a day of fellowship. The Association will have another day of the Presidents s visit planned in January 2006. After the Presidents s presence on Monday, the Association held a luncheon for the President s family. Following the luncheon, members attended a brief reception for the public. To prepare for the Presidents s visit, historians attended a special session of the Association on February 6. Following the day s meetings, members met in groups of five or seven and visited museums and monuments. The Association staff prepared books describing the visits, and published a schedule of events for the Presidents. On Sunday, February 13, an estimated 15,000 people attended the Presidents s Residence, including President George Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and a guest of honor, former President Gerald R. Ford. President Bush, who traveled to Lake View for two days, was joined by former President William Howard Taft and Secretary of State Cyrus R. Vance, along with several Secretaries of State and Under Secretaries of Defense, as well as Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson. For a few hours between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., the Presidents greeted a large procession of dignitaries, some of whom had traveled from the White House: President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower; Mrs. William Rogers; Mrs. Paul N. Warner; Chief Justice William O. Douglas; Vice President Henry B. Eyeing; the Honorable David R. Jones; Senators Joseph R. Biden and Robert C. Byrd; the Honorable William R. Haggerty; Senator Joseph R. Promise; Senator Richard A. Lugar; Governor James B. Reed; Senator Benjamin L. Cardin; and Senators Edward M. Kennedy and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. For the first time in history, a sitting president delivered his inaugural address. For the second time in history, a sitting vice president, in his inaugural address, delivered a speech of similar magnitude.
