This report provides an update of information on energy efficiency measures on ships to be undertaken by IMO during the year 2010 based on a report of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (EPCC) and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). 2. The IMO is taking actions to reduce emissions of GHG from ships, taking into account input from ICAO as described in the report ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF IMPORTED FUEL SAVING IN SHIPS, which will be adopted by the IMO in 2009. Thereafter, in accordance with the mandate of the Committee on Prevention of Pollution from Ships and the IMO Code of Conduct and International Ship Sustainability Guidelines, the recommendations of IMO and ICAO will continue to be taken into account. 3. As at the time of the report's release, ICAO is not adopting any new GHG emission reduction measures. The ICAO Technical Committee on Energy Management is undertaking a review as of 29 June 2009 of the Annexes and Annexes III and IV to the UNF CCC Third Committee (ECC) Kyoto Protocol. This effort is the subject of the review process. 4. The implementation actions in this report are limited to the following countries that were in force as of 31 January 2010 and have ratified the Protocol: AUSTRALIA, CANADA, NEW ZEALAND, UNITED KINGDOM, THE NETHERLANDS, SPAIN, UNITED STATES, THE UNITED STATES AND THE UNITED KINGDOM. 5. All action taken is based on the UNF CCC Third Committee (ECC) Kyoto Protocol and is consistent with the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNF CCC) and with ICAO's GHG emission guidelines including Annex II. It is not based on national regulations that are binding, nor does it constitute measures to regulate shipping. 6. This report is a complement to previous reports on the implementation of various GHG emissions reduction measures. 7. This report is not meant to be interpreted as the final word on the subject. Additional information can be found in IMO Bulletin 1547 and in the relevant publications of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.
