The questionnaire was. The whole research project was conducted at the Center for Development Research in Bonn, Germany. I am not aware of any publication pertaining to this questionnaire. The final version with the fieldwork questionnaire should have been submitted to me before completion of my thesis. A study group of 14 Nepalese and seven Indian young adults, recruited from the universities, was investigated to investigate possible influences of social labelling policies on occupational and educational outcomes. This article provides a preliminary and descriptive overview of the study. Methods Individuals were recruited for this study across a number of villages in Nepal and India between 2001 and 2008 with a total of 2,072 households. The sampling of the households included a stratified random sampling of adults, followed by a final stratified random sampling of children into three age groups (0-3-, 4-6 and 9 and above). Recruitment took place at college campuses and urban centers and in rural districts. Participants filled out the questionnaire (in Arabic and Nepalese) about their child-rearing habits and child and household activities such as school attendance, household activities, child-care services and income. The questionnaire was designed to assess the main predictors of children's educational and occupational outcomes (educational and labor market outcomes) in Nepal and India. The survey questions included information about household members' education level and the educational/occupational milestones a child should pass over. The questionnaire also included information about household activities, household activities' economic and material resources and household activities' educational/labor market outcomes. Results This cross-sectional study indicated that the social labelling legislation was associated with a reduction in the number of children living in rural households and a positive correlation was found with the household-level labor market outcomes of adult children's primary school attendance, primary education, participation in the labor market and their economic status. Indicators for children's secondary school attendance were not correlated in any of these relationships. The study results indicate a negative correlation and non-significant change in the number of children under the age of two living in rural households with the imposition of social labelling policy and these associations remained similar after controlling for other non-education related variables. CONCLUSIONS For those wishing to make accurate socio-economic and economic analyses, social labelling policies should be evaluated based on the overall picture of the child-rearing practices and household-level activities of the households.
