OWS includes a design resource, a compiler, an open source software library and tools. This platform will enable designers to design and verify their hardware designs. It will open the door for a new generation of full custom software OWS. It will provide the developer access to the high level software functionality of the main chip as a common toolkit to build integrated high performance audio/video/application processors. The prototype has been developed at a large German consumer electronics manufacturer with the objective to demonstrate its functional capability. We expect this prototype to be integrated into various OWS hardware products with commercial availability in the second quarter 2011. The design and verification activities are to be financed with a contract from this manufacturer. A second prototype was developed in two years, and later tested at D-link for comparison with the prototype of TU Dresden. The prototype proved to produce a usable video signal. Our design exploration platform is currently available for purchase. We have been looking into a software application framework capable of supporting a wide range of programming platforms. We have also been working on an OWS based video receiver capable of integrating in a multimedia PC. The second article will present our software framework and video receiver. This article is an update on our previous work on a hardware video decoder. Introduction OWS is an attempt to reduce development time, the cost and time to market for complex embedded systems and to enable better design of higher reliability systems. A well-designed OWS is capable of performing any embedded functions, that is for example, a video decoder, remote control, audio processing or a variety of other applications in an industrial embedded applications system. Many existing design and test facilities have no specific tasks in this domain. There is an excellent market for such a tool: over 200 million video receivers on the market and about 2000 video display terminals are in demand in Germany alone. As a consequence OWS has been actively pursued since August 2007. During this time we have been conducting experiments to address our design requirements, implementing several experimental design approaches. We have already had some success. In the summer of 2008, we managed to develop the first working prototype. Since this time we have been doing regular test cycles. Today we would like to present this work to the community so that it can be developed further and used to realize a full scale prototype and demonstration. A detailed design exploration of the system is presented here. Although all our test results have been promising, there are still several technical challenges which will need to be solved before this can be produced.
