The U.S. Coast Guard said its vessel, the Rive Mobil, had been conducting routine surveillance of the oil rig Monday when a man aboard the rig jumped out and ran. The man ran from the rig, and he was spotted by one the nearby boats near the bridge. Cochrane's officials said it appeared that no one from the operator of the rig came to the bridge to see what happened. The man jumped from the rig into the water, but the Coast Guard could not stop him until the Rive Mobil arrived. The man was treated at a Cochrane hospital and released Tuesday. Cochrane Town Manager Bill Bugle said town police were called to the scene just before midnight Monday. One of the residents, a 73-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with no discernible injuries. The other man, a 21-year-old man, was treated in the hospital, with unspecified injuries, after he jumped from the ship. The town's water system was shut down during the spill. A number of people were watching from the shore near Cochrane's marina. The two-lane bridge is not normally open to traffic, but it was because of the Coast Guard's presence. Bugle said the two sides of the span were opened Tuesday evening to allow emergency personnel access and lift debris, and later to allow the Rive Mobil to unload crude oil. “The bridge reopened just in case,” Bugle said. While Cochrane, population 8,000, closed portions of the bridge overnight and the town is still assessing the overall damage, Bugle said it appeared no one was hurt as a direct result of the spill and no one else was in danger. “Everything is running smoothly” for now, he said. A portion of the bridge's north side was demolished, but the center portion remains standing, while the south side in the middle of the island wasn't affected. When the bridge came down, it also washed out a stretch of the river between Cochrane and the bridge. Crews had to dig out the mud and sand, then pull it away so that a new water line could be built. The bridge itself has been removed, as well as the pilings on the river bank. “We didn't want to pull down any of the pilings,” Bugle said. “They're just a symbol of how we feel for the town that we had nothing to do with this. Just an innocent bystander.
