To qualify to live at AFRH, veterans are eligible from one of three main categories: Category 1: 60 years of age or older and served at least 20 years on active duty, with the majority of that time spent in the enlisted ranks or as a warrant officer. 85% of our residents spent a career in the military.
The branches issue your retirement orders. Remember, you MUST have retirement orders from your branch of service before we can establish your military retired pay account. Please contact your Branch of Service for assistance with the following items: CRSC eligibility determinations.
Retired veterans are eligible if: Served 20 or more years on active duty in a regular component of the military; or • Served in the Guard/Reserves and have at least 20 years of creditable service; or • Qualified for an early retirement such as TERA, RIF or disability.
Members who accumulate 20 or more years of active service are eligible for retirement. There are three non-disability retirement plans currently in effect for active duty retirees. These are Final Pay plan, High-36 Month Average plan, and Military Retirement Reform Act of 1986 (more commonly referred to as REDUX) plan.
Married couples may apply for residency at AFRH as long as both individuals meet medical and legal eligibility requirements. Accommodations for couples are subject to availability.

Active-duty enlisted members have contributed directly from their pay to support the AFRH since its founding in the 1850s. Warrant officers began contributing in the 1910s and limited duty officers in 1990. The contribution amount has been $0.50 per member per month since 1977.
