The operation phase of a nuclear power plant is generally the longest phase of its life cycle. Presently, India has 22 operating reactors, with an installed capacity of 6780 MWe. Among these eighteen reactors are Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and four are Light Water Reactors (LWRs).
The first Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) in India was set up at Tarapur in 1964. This reactor was a result of collaboration between Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses and regulates civilian use of nuclear energy to protect public health and safety and the environment.
IPHWR-220. The first PHWR units built in India (RAPS-1 and RAPS-2) are of Canadian CANDU design similar to the first full-scale Canadian reactor built at Douglas point, Ontario. The reactors were set up in collaboration with Government of Canada.
APSARA was the first nuclear research reactor in India and also Asia. Its design was conceptualized by Dr Homi Bhabha (the Father of the Indian nuclear programme) in 1955. The reactor was named APSARA and dedicated to the nation in 1957 by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
