In 1880 the U. S. Senate appointed a committee to investigate the causes of black migration from the South. Benjamin Singleton was one of the persons called to testify before the committee, and presented his reasons for encouraging the migration.
Thousands of African-Americans made their way to Kansas and other Western states after Reconstruction. The Homestead Act and other liberal land laws offered blacks (in theory) the opportunity to escape the racism and oppression of the post-war South and become owners of their own tracts of private farmland.
Stymied, Singleton started to explore the possibility of moving a large number of people to Kansas, a state that had more reasonable land prices and an undeniable reputation for freedom in the African American imagination.
Benjamin "Pap" Singleton (August 15, 1809 – February 17, 1900) was an American activist and businessman best known for his role in establishing African American settlements in Kansas.
Nicodemus, Kansas is the oldest surviving town west of the Mississippi River settled solely by African Americans.
Instead of a continuous struggle to live together, Singleton sought a pragmatic racial separatism from white Southerners. This urge drove his first efforts to help African Americans purchase separate farming communities in his native Tennessee during the late 1860s.
In 1879, Singleton's tireless appeal helped encourage some 20,000 African Americans from the Deep South to migrate to Kansas over the next two years in what became known as the Great Exodus of 1879. These Exodusters, as they came to be known, hailed largely from Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana.
