A vehicle receives a salvage title if it sustains a significant amount of damage and is declared a total loss. When the cost of fixing a car comes too close to or exceeds the vehicle's value, an insurance company may determine a vehicle is totaled and the state will then issue a salvage title for the car.
Ultimately, a Salvage Title means pretty much nothing. All it means is the cost of repairs was close to the current value of the vehicle. It does not mean that the car sustained any structural damage. It does not mean that it was involved in a high-speed collision. It does not mean any airbags deployed.
A Total Loss/Non-Repairable Vehicle meets one of the following criteria: The vehicle has been declared by the owner solely as a source of parts or scrap metal. The vehicle has been completely stripped (surgical strip). The vehicle is a completely burned shell with no usable or repairable parts.
Cars that are deemed a total loss must be registered as salvage with your state's DMV. However, they are not roadworthy and can't be driven until you've obtained a rebuilt title and your state's minimum amount of insurance coverage.
Take the completed TR-13, the current title or the registration receipt if there is a lien on the vehicle and the title is being held electronically, and letter from insurance company showing the vehicle was salvaged to your local county treasurer's motor vehicle office and make application for the salvage title.
A person may not operate or use a salvage vehicle on the roads or highways of this state except when a temporary registration permit has been issued as provided in subsection (1).
It is generally not a good idea to own a salvage vehicle. Something has happened to it to make it no longer economically viable. If it was in a flood, it may not have suffered any obvious body damage, but there are electrical gremlins incubating inside, just waiting to wreak havoc with the electronics in that car.
Should the vehicle have been declared a total loss and issued a salvage title, it is illegal to drive it until you obtain a revived salvage title.
