SLD accepts heads or brains of animals; bats should be submitted whole (see rabies submission guide for further laboratory submission instructions). For large animals (horses, cattle, etc.) the entire brain should be removed intact (including medulla, cerebellum and hippocampus) and sent in for testing.
Disarticulate the atlanto-occipital joint. It is possible to dissect the ligaments connecting this joint, but probably easier and faster to hyperextend the head and manually tear the ligaments. You will hear and feel a snap when this is accomplished.
Diagnosis in animals A diagnosis of rabies can be made after detection of rabies virus from any part of the affected brain, but to rule out rabies, the test must include a full cross-section of tissue from both the brain stem and cerebellum. Rabies testing requires that the animal be euthanized.
Fresh tissue samples from the central nervous system (brain) should be submitted. Postmortem diagnosis of rabies is made by immunofluorescent staining of viral antigen in touch impressions of the medulla (brain stem), the cerebellum, and the hippocampus. Fresh, non-formalin-fixed tissues are preferred.
The only test for rabies in animals that may be used to guide human rabies risk analysis is the direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test. There is no live animal test for rabies. The animal's brain, specifically the entire section of the cerebellum, hippocampus, and brainstem are required to perform the DFA test.
For large animals (horses, cattle, etc.) the entire brain should be removed intact (including medulla, cerebellum and hippocampus) and sent in for testing.
Rabies testing requires that the animal be euthanized. There are no approved methods for ante-mortem rabies testing of animals. In the U.S., the results of a rabies test are typically available within 24 to 72 hours after an animal is euthanized.
Animals specimens Include completed CDC Form 50.34(s) with each specimen in your shipment. If a human exposure is involved with the animal for which specimens were submitted: Contact your state health department and the Rabies Duty Officer to facilitate expedited testing.
