To serve in AmeriCorps State and National or AmeriCorps NCCC, you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States.
Under the CARES Act, Section 3514(d), the upper age limit for AmeriCorps NCCC members is 26. AmeriCorps NCCC applies the upper age limit at the time a member arrives on campus and is activated as a member. That means individuals must be on campus and activated as members for at least one day before turning 27.
While Peace Corps Volunteers serve for two years, a stint in AmeriCorps usually lasts 10 months to one year. (Some AmeriCorps projects also offer part-time opportunities, and some AmeriCorps members serve more than one term of service.)
It's absolutely worth it. It's usually full time and different positions have contracts for different terms anywhere from three months to a year. You'll receive a very small stipend to cover your living expenses and upon completion of your service will qualify for an education reward equivalent to the pell grant.
In order to serve, all NCCC members must be citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States over the age of 18. Corps Members may be no older than 26, while there is no upper age limit for Team Leaders.
An AmeriCorps member may serve either a full-time term of service, which requires 1700 hours; or a part-time term, which can range from 300 hours to 900 hours.
Transportation expenses that you incur while performing your AmeriCorps service activities — other than your daily commute — can be reimbursed.
