Cedar County was formed on December 21, 1837 from sections of Dubuque County. It was named for the Red Cedar River, which runs through the county, and is the only Iowa county which shares the name of a tree. Herbert Hoover, the 31st US president, was born in West Branch in 1874.
History. Forest City was officially founded in 1855. Formerly known as “Puckerbrush”, Robert Clark the official founder/surveyor deemed it “Forest City” because it was cut right out of the trees. It was then platted in 1856, and later incorporated on June 14, 1878.
Holy Cross, in northern Dubuque County, is a community that was settled by Irish and German immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1842, Mathias Loras, a Bishop with the Catholic Archdiocese of Dubuque, traveled to the community. While here, he said mass and blessed a cross made by the settlers.
Cedar Falls grew from approximately 450 people to over 1,500, from 1855 to 1860. The area began developing and the post office was opened in 1850, a schoolhouse in 1853 and a railroad connection in 1861. In 1863, the Civil War Soldier's Orphan Home was built. This has since become the University of Northern Iowa.
The county served as a natural gateway to the west with early pioneers traveling through the county and into the state's wilderness. Pioneers and military wagon trains wound their way through oak groves and expanses of tall grass prairie along the Diamond Trail.
