Density is the mass or weight of a material per unit volume. There are two density values used for soils. Particle density (Dp ) is the mass of oven-dry soil divided by the volume of the solid particles. Bulk density (BD ) is the mass of oven-dry soil divided by the total soil volume (i.e. volume of solids and pores).
Bulk density is typically measured by taking soil core samples and obtaining their dry weight and total volume. Soil cores are collected using cylindrical sampling probes [Figure 1]. In this approach, a cylindrical core or probe with a known cutting-edge diameter is pushed into the soil.
High bulk density is desirable for reducing shipping and packaging costs. On the other hand, low bulk density, as seen in agglomerated products, influences other powder properties such as flowability and instant characteristics.
Apparent volume is expressed in g/ml and calculated as volume divided by weight, tap density is expressed in g/ml and calculated as weight divided by volume. The instrument detects automatically the working position of the cylinder dish and adjusts ingly the settings.
Standard or bulk density of cement is 1440 kg/m3 and 1 bag of cement is of 50 kg therefore volume of 1 bag of cement = Cement can be manufactured either from natural cement stones or artificially by using calcareous and argillaceous materials.
Two types of bulk density are often used: initial bulk density is the bulk density when well-dispersed particles are put gently into a container, while tap density is that obtained after a tapping procedure in which the powder container is repeatedly lifted and dropped onto a solid surface.
Types of Density Usually, the density is of two types, one is absolute density, and the other is relative density. Relative density is also known as specific gravity, which is the ratio of the density of a material to the density of reference material. Usually, the reference material is water.
The bulk density of the material is calculated using the following formula: D = M / V, where: D: Bulk density (g/l) M: Weight of the full container (g) V: Container volume (l), e.g. one litre as in the case described above. Value displayed on scale is in g/l, for kg/m3 multiply by 1,000.
