WHAT: Out of a field of 55 state and jurisdictional champions, nine high school students are advancing to the 2025 Poetry Out Loud National Finals on May 7. This website includes an online anthology of more than 1,200 poems. The students must choose from that online anthology, or from the print Poetry Out Loud anthology. If a poem appears in the print anthology but cannot be found in the online anthology, it is still eligible for competition.

Tips: Present yourself well and be attentive. Use good posture. Be confident and make a direct connection with the audience. Nervous gestures and lack of confidence will detract from your score. Relax and be natural. Enjoy your poem — the judges will notice.
The final nine then recite two poems, and the top three recite a third poem. Judges (who are usually poetry/literary celebrities) select the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The 1st place winner wins $20,000, the 2nd place winner wins $10,000, and the 3rd place winner wins $5,000.
