Once you complete your program of study and any authorized period of practical training, F students have 60 days after completion of your program (the program end date on your Form I-20) to leave the United States.
After the end date on your updated I-20, you are granted a 60-day grace period to remain in the U.S. This period gives you time to prepare for your next steps, whether that's transitioning to another visa status or returning to your home country – though it's strongly recommended to have a gameplan well in advance.
Once accepted into a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, nonimmigrant students will receive a Form I-20 from their designated school official (DSO). You must also obtain a Form I-20 for any eligible dependents you plan to bring to the United States with you.
What is a Form I-20? Form I-20s are “Certificates of Eligibility” for F visa status. This form shows the U.S. government that you are considered eligible to apply for a F-1 Student visa based on your documented funds and academic record.
End of Grace Period The grace period ends when you depart the U.S., or no later than 60 days (or 30 days for J-1) after the end of the I-20 or your EAD card (if on OPT), whichever comes first.
Even if your visa has expired, you may still be in lawful status if your I-94 is valid. Visa Overstay: If your period of stay has passed and you haven't applied for an extension or a change of status, you're considered to be overstaying, which could have serious legal implications.
I-20 Program End Date You may lose your lawful F-1 status and all associated benefits if you: (1) Fail to apply for an extension before your I-20 expires even if you have a valid reason for extension. (2) You apply for an extension but do not meet the requirements for an extension.
While there isn't a fixed minimum balance, it's recommended to have enough funds to cover at least the first year's expenses, as estimated on your I20 visa form. Some sources suggest having at least ₹8,33,510 (based on an exchange rate of ₹83.35 per US dollar) or 1.5 times your I-20 expenses.
