American bullfrogs are large frogs with wide heads, stout bodies, and long, hind legs with fully-webbed hind feet. Bullfrogs have smooth skin which is green to brown in color on their backs, often with dark spots or mottling, and white to grey to yellow in color on their bellies, with or without mottling.
No toxic skin secretions, although some Leopard Frogs appear to mimic the Pickerel Frog which does have toxic skin secretions. Leopard Frogs have been known to hybridize with the Pickerel Frogs which could also explain similarities.
Unlike its similar, heavily round-spotted relative, the northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens), only a few dark spots occur on the sides of the southern leopard frog. The dark spots on the upper surface of its body are highly variable in occurrence, and often elongated.
Adult Green Frogs usually have a clear ridge-line from the nostril to the "eye brow", while Bullfrogs have very smooth, domed snouts. Bullfrogs also have a wider gap between their eye and jawline.
The leopard frog is called that because it is spotted, like a leopard. This was once the most widespread frog species in North America.
Unlike leopard frogs, bullfrogs do not have any large rounded spots or lines on their back. They are mostly green and brown, and often have spotting on their legs and bellies. Adult bullfrogs are generally much larger than adult leopard frogs, reaching over 6 inches long compared to 4.5 inches for a large leopard frog.
Although common across much of their eastern range, the Rocky Mountain population of northern leopard frog is endangered under the federal Species at Risk Act.
