Your GPA is your grade point average. It's calculated by assigning a numerical value to each letter grade you earn and dividing that by the total number of classes you take. To exemplify, an A=4, B=3, C=2, and D=1. This means that receiving a fail (or F) gives you a zero.
To request a pass/fail grade for a course, students must submit a pass/fail request form online by the term deadline. Note: You must be logged into your NYU email to access the form.
What Is a Pass/Fail Class? A pass/fail grading option is an alternative to traditional letter grades. In a pass/fail system, students are typically assessed as either “pass” or “fail” based on their overall performance in a course. At some schools, it might be called credit/no credit or satisfactory/unsatisfactory.
Pass/fail courses are given an S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory). You get the course credit but not a grade, so it won't do anything to help improve your GPA — or make it worse. Like all of our students who go on exchanges, they go on Pass/Fail for their exchange semester.
There is no impact on your GPA. However, if you fail the course, you won't earn any credits, a grade of F (fail) will appear on your transcript, and your GPA will be impacted. Courses taken as pass/fail count toward your full- or part-time standing for purposes of financial aid or loan deferments.
Guidelines for pass/no pass grades No pass (NP) grades represent a level of performance at a D+ or lower. No units or grade points will be earned. Neither P nor NP grades will affect your GPA.
For example, the instructor would enter a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) as usual. If the student has chosen the Pass/Fail grade option, then grades A, B or C become a PP; a grade of D becomes a PS; a grade of F becomes an F.
