An endorsement in gifted education is a distinction added to a teacher's professional certificate that verifies that they have received a level of instruction that equips them to teach gifted coursework or classes.
Teachers of the gifted must be flexible and insightful. They must also be strong communicators with a high level of social awareness. These traits can be worked on over time so that relationships with gifted students and their families can truly flourish and gifted students can make the most of their abilities.
The Endorsement is divided into three courses consisting of two 5 PLU classes and one 7 plu class and must be taken in sequence. Completion of the three courses is required in order to add the Gifted endorsement to an existing level 4 professional teaching certificate or higher. This is a job-embedded program.
Most states require a graduate degree and special certification in order to work in a gifted program. Some states, however, require only a generic teaching degree and certification along with the desire to become a gifted education teacher.
Code §16.21) indicates that a person with an IQ lower than 130 may be identified as gifted when other educational criteria in the student's profile strongly indicate gifted ability. An IQ score may not be the sole criteria for identifying a student as a gifted student.
