Instructions and Help about cms 339
In this episode we're going to continue our look at the refinery content management system so if you haven't already watch the previous episode on refinery to get up to speed in that episode we used refinery to make this site for a piano store it has a nice-looking homepage and another page for displaying more information about the stores' location but what I would like to do is add a section to the site for browsing the pianos, but I don't simply want to just list the site in the piano statically on a page instead I want to store the pianos in the database and then manage them through the refinery's admin section so in addition to the tabs displayed at the top here I want another tab for managing the piano records now to do this it helps to have a better understanding of how refinery works internally now each of these tabs are implemented using a separate rails engine, so that means the engine handles the admin side of the information and also the public side of displaying that information to the user, and you can see this if you check out the source code for refinery there are several directories here that contain a rails' engine for example you have your pages and images and the dashboard and authentication contains the users tab and the resources contains the files tab so inside each of these is a rails' engine, so this makes refinery very modular you can easily extend it by adding your own engine and that's what we're going to do here I want a section for managing pianos and displaying them to the user so let's make a pianos engine and refinery comes with a generator for doing just this is called refinery engine, and it's similar to a scaffolding, so you followed by the name of the resource such as piano and for the attributes let's say I want to name dimensions column and a manufacturer date and how about something to determine whether it's an upright piano and I would also like to attach a photo to each record so if you pass an image as a type a refinery will automatically handle that for you and I want a description so let's make that a text column so this generated an engine for us and a place is under vendor extensions pianos and it also gave us some instructions to run, but before I do that let's take a look at what it did to the gem file for this application so if I open up the gem file this happens take a look at the bottom you can see it headed this line to the bottom here called refinery CMS pianos and this is a gem that points to the vendor extensions path so this is fascinating not only did this generate an engine it also turned it into a gem which we require inside our rails application so this means it's very easy to take this engine and turn it into a public gem that you can use in other applications, and you can see there are severals commented out gems here which are basically the same thing each one is in a separate engine for extending refinery such as adding a blog a search and so on now since this new extension isn't...
