Prerequisites. Directed Studies has no prerequisites and is designed for students with or without any background in humanities or Western thought, ancient or modern. Students must enroll in the full slate of Directed Studies courses in both semesters of the program.
The Program Each IDE class averages about 30-35 students a year. What is our admission rate? In the past few years, we have received approximately 550 applications and have admitted about 50 students for an incoming class of 30-35 students.
Directed Study is designed to be a substitute for a traditional course that is not offered in the semester for which the student wishes to enroll. The material covered in such courses is essentially the same as that covered in the traditional course.
Approximately ten percent of each first-year class is admitted to Directed Studies. The Yale College Admissions Office offers some students admission to Directed Studies on the basis of their Yale College application.
Directed Studies, a selective program for freshmen, is an interdisciplinary study of Western civilization. One hundred twenty-five students are accepted each year.
It is true that DS is hard, but the workload is no greater than that of any other cluster of challenging Yale courses.
A directed study is a coherent, well-defined, substantive reading and research project supervised by a faculty member, usually resulting in a major written document. It is not unit-for-work experience.
Directed studies involve reading in a topic area and/or conducting a piece of original research under the supervision of a full-time Sociology faculty member.
