The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 (10 years) qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan, while working full-time for a qualifying employer.
Only loans you received under the Direct Loan Program are eligible for PSLF. Loans you received under the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program, the Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) Program, or any other student loan program are not eligible for PSLF.
How much forgiveness can I get? Under all four plans, any remaining loan balance is forgiven if your federal student loans aren't fully repaid at the end of the repayment period. There is no limit on how much forgiveness you receive as long as you meet the requirements.
Under the 10-year Standard Repayment Plan, generally your loans will be paid in full once you have made 120 qualifying PSLF payments so there would be no balance left to forgive unless periods of qualifying deferments or forbearances are included in your 120 qualifying payments.
In order to encourage students to make meaningful contributions to social justice, sustainability, or the health of democratic institutions, we offer a loan forgiveness program to reduce the financial burden of educational debt by paying a percentage of graduates' Stanford GSB loan obligations.
This can limit your career flexibility, as you are bound to work in public service or non-profit sector for an extended period. Additionally, there's a risk that if you leave your job or switch to a non-qualifying employer before making 120 payments, you lose eligibility for PSLF.
