It's harder for older people to change and thus they resist or ignore that more people are choosing different pronouns than they used to or are just being more vocal about what they are. Gen z is less prone to resisting and ignoring change so what you see as obsessed is just them embracing and accepting it.
A common error is to use “they” (a plural pronoun) when referring to a singular noun. While this may be considered normal everyday speech, avoid it in formal writing. Incorrect: I hate it when a customer doesn't know what they want. Correct: I hate it when customers don't know what they want.
