Most plant presses are upper and lower frames, usually a lattice of hardwood laths. Between the frames are sheets of cardboard (called ventilators) and absorptive paper (called driers). Belts with friction cinches are used to tighten the contents inside the frames, helping to flatten plant samples.
Directions Cut two identically sized pieces of wood. Line up and clamp your two boards together. Cut the cardboard. Lay the flowers face down in the arrangement you want them to appear when dried. Keep repeating this until your press is filled.
If you don't have a plant press, no worries! You can place the papered plants within a heavy book or in between two pieces of cardboard. You want to ensure enough weight is applied to evenly flatten the plants, so stack a couple of heavy books on top. Allow 1-2 weeks for the plants to completely dry.
DIY Plant Pressing Step 1: Find your plants. Gather a couple plant specimens (be sure they're in your own yard or an area where you're allowed to collect!). Step 2: Fold them into newspaper. Step 3: Start layering. Step 4: Wait for them to dry.
You can dry several plants in the press at one time. Each should be arranged in the same layers as described above. Check the plants every two or three days, and replace the damp papers with dry ones. It will take from two to four weeks before the specimens are completely dry.
A modern plant press consists of two strong outer boards with straps that can be tightened around them to exert pressure. Between the boards, fresh plant samples are placed, carefully labelled, between layers of paper.
The plant press consists of a frame (typically wooden, for rigidity), corrugated cardboard ventilators (to allow air to flow through the press and as structure to flatten the plants), blotter paper (to absorb moisture), and folded paper (typically a fold of newspaper to contain the plant material).
You can dry several plants in the press at one time. Each should be arranged in the same layers as described above. Check the plants every two or three days, and replace the damp papers with dry ones. It will take from two to four weeks before the specimens are completely dry.
