CPT: Must be related to your major and required for graduation (i.e., receive course credit or used for thesis if applicable, etc). OPT: Must be related to your major, but not necessarily required for graduation.
Does CPT require visa sponsorship? CPT is not a separate visa category and does not require “sponsorship” from an employer. However, the student must have a practical training offer from the employer before they can apply for CPT authorization.
CPT must be required by your major and if it is not, you must receive course credit. Only certain employers participate in CPT. Alternately, OPT is not employer specific and allows work, not an internship or co-op, and you do not need to earn course credit.
Be in valid F-1 immigration status for at least two full-time semesters (1 academic year) before becoming eligible for CPT. A DSO can authorize CPT for an F-1 student enrolled at an SEVP-certified college, university, conservatory, or seminary if the student: Has been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for at least a full academic year. Note: An exception exists for students in graduate studies whose programs require earlier training.
OPT (Optional Practical Training) is a benefit available to international students in F-1 immigration status who are enrolled in, or completing, a degree program in the United States.
