Weevils are small beetles with long, narrow snouts -- a characteristic of insects belonging to the Curculionidae family. Many species of weevil are agricultural and household pests.
The adult acorn weevil (Curculio sp.) is a brown beetle about 3/8 inches in length and with a very long, thin snout.
Annual bluegrass weevil larvae possess five larval instars. Larvae are legless and uniform in width or shaped like a grain of rice. Larvae are cream-colored with orange-brown head capsules and range from 1⁄25 to 1⁄6 inches long. The larvae are stem borers through the first three instars.
Adult annual bluegrass weevils can be distinguished from billbugs by their elongated body shape, pronounced curved snout, and dark brown to black coloration, whereas billbugs have a more robust body, straighter snout, and varying dull colors. Additionally, their sizes and characteristics of their elytra differ.
It is important to have Acelepryn moving in the transpiration stream of the plant when the ABW larvae hatch and begin to chew their way into the stem in late April to mid-May. Evidence shows Acelepryn will provide high levels of ABW control when applied three weeks before hatch.
They are considerably smaller than other weevil or billbug pests occasionally found in turf. For example, an adult bluegrass billbug is about 1/4th inch long while an ABW adult is only about 5/32nd inch long. It is easier to discuss in terms of millimeters, bluegrass billbug is about 8 mm long while ABW is 3-4 mm long.
As its name suggests, ABW larvae and adults feed primarily on annual bluegrass, but also feeds on creeping bentgrass and perennial ryegrass. It's an especially aggressive invader of newly stands of creeping bentgrass.
The annual bluegrass weevil (ABW, Listronotus maculicollis Kirby), one of the “snout beetles” in the family Curculionidae, is a destructive pest of short-mown turfgrass in golf courses and sports fields. Adults measure less than 1/5 inch (< 5 millimeters) in length, with antennae near the end of their snout (Figure 1).
