How long does it take to do the SEVIS transfer? As the SEVIS transfer is electronic, it happens instantaneously. Your SEVIS record will be sent to your new school electronically on your transfer release date. After the release it, it will take some time for them to create your new I-20.
Your USC program must begin no later than five (5) months after the end of your current program or OPT. This is very important. Your SEVIS record will be cancelled automatically after five months. USC will not accept Terminated, Cancelled or Completed SEVIS records.
You are eligible to request a SEVIS record transfer during the 60-day grace period following your program completion. However, remember to allow for ISS processing; contact ISS at least 3 weeks before the end of your 60-day grace period to request the SEVIS transfer.
What is the impact of transfers on employed students? Students can work on campus only at the school that controls their SEVIS record. With a DSO's permission, students can work on campus at the transfer-out school until the transfer release date.
Transfer Pending I-20 After processing your transfer in SEVIS, OIS will issue your I-20 with a “Transfer Pending” notation as the reason for issue. This is normal and it means your SEVIS record has been properly transferred.
SEVIS records are government property. If a student meets the eligibility requirements for a transfer as stated in 8 CFR 214.2(f)(8), DSOs may not refuse to transfer the SEVIS record of a student accepted by another school certified by SEVP for any reason, including financial or business reasons.
