You will typically encounter three types of generators: portable, inverter, and standby generators. While they all differ in their application and use, the common thread between them all is their capacity to produce electricity when required.
Small Quantity Generators generate more than 100 kilograms, but less than 1,000 kilograms of hazardous waste per month. Large Quantity Generators generate 1,000 kilograms per month or more of hazardous waste, or more than 1 kilogram per month of acutely hazardous waste.
Permissible on-site accumulation quantities: LQGs have no limit on the amount of hazardous waste that they can have on-site. SQGs, on the other hand, are limited to less than or equal to 6,000 kilograms (less than 13,000 pounds).
Small quantity generators (SQGs) generate dangerous waste, but do so in lesser quantities than other generator categories. While all dangerous waste generators must follow the Dangerous Waste Regulations, the rules for SQGs are less complex than those of other generators, which is why being “small” can be a benefit.
If you generate 100 kilograms or less of RCRA waste or one kilogram or less per month of acutely hazardous waste, and meet certain other requirements, you are exempted by U.S. EPA from many of its regulations, including the requirement to have an EPA ID Number.
A CESGQ with less than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of hazardous waste may store the waste indefinitely. Once you accumulate 100 kg., you may store it up to 90 days. After 90 days, you must send your waste to a licensed recycling or disposal facility (California Health and Safety Code, Section 25123.3).
Accumulation Time Limits – The generator can keep a satellite accumulation container on-site for a maximum of one year from the date the waste is first placed in the container, or 90 (LQG) or 180 (SQG) days from the date the generator accumulates 55 gallons of hazardous waste or one quart of AHW, whichever occurs first
Large Quantity Generators (LQGs) generate 1,000 kilograms per month or more of hazardous waste or more than one kilogram per month of acutely hazardous waste. Major requirements for LQGs include: LQGs may only accumulate waste on-site for 90 days.
