Every first-year student is required to take a Signature Course and each course is designed to put you in contact with top faculty from across the university, help you become a better writer, speaker, and problem solver; introduce you to research methods and critical thinking skills that will translate to any college course; highlight gems of the university like the Landmarks' art projects; and get you involved in a campus-wide academic event like the UniversityLecture Series. Signature Courses come in two varieties: UGS 302 and UGS 303.UGS 302 courses are seminars with about 18 students.UGS 303 courses are lectures with 50 to 200 students with discussion sections of 17 students. With over 220 courses to choose from, their#39’s something for everyone. The class that I took was called quot;Language and Humor” and we studied how language issued in English and how it's humorous. Initially, I just thought that would be a fun class, IN#39’d never taken something like that before, and it just sounded interesting and was something that was different Fromm major that I wouldn't normally study. Take a course that has nothing to do with your major, your career or who you believe yourself to be. In other words, use this opportunity to challenge yourself to move into territory, into disciplines, into questions that you had never thought about before. For me, Chinese literature was just like way out there, but it was something that I was really interested in and I sort of had a passion for, and I wanted to learn more about, so it made the course so much more enjoyable. One piece of advice I would give to incoming freshmen about their Signature Course is to constantly think about the key takeaways for their own lives. So as they examine readings, videos, lectures, conversations with their classmates, to constantly ask themselves, you know, “How can I apply this material to my life?quot;not just on the Forty Acres but also, after graduation.
