Hi everybody today we're talking to supervisors mostly we're talking to social service supervisors but really the ideas that we're going to share with you today apply to anyone who is in a supervisory position you know being a supervisor is a tough job you have people on both sides of you looking for help you have your boss who expects you to do things in a certain way, and you have the people who work for you who are also looking for help and support from you, but I have five ideas that I'd like to share with you that I think are directly connected to your success as a supervisor and here's the first one first you have to be a teacher and not a cop this is largely a matter of your headset and/or your attitude that you approach your job with you're trying to teach people the correct way of doing something you're not there to catch them making a mistake and punish them for it do you see your staff as growing and changing as being ready for more responsibility that's a clue that you understand what teaching is all about pay attention to your staff don't just sit back and wait for them to do something wrong in order for you to have a one-on-one conversation with them listen to what they have to say reach out to them and speak to them many times here's the second idea these are ideas that are related to your success as a supervisor secondly establish a positive working relationship with everyone around you that means your colleagues that is other supervisors in the organization it means the people who report to you directly your direct reports and your boss in terms of your direct reports do they see that you are concerned about their welfare not just how they do on the job but what's going on in the rest of their lives as well with their families with their education plans with where they are in terms of their careers with colleagues or peers that means other supervisors in the organization like a supervisor who works in building maintenance or a supervisor who works in finance from time to time you're going to need their help in order to do your job, so it's a good idea to establish a positive relationship with them and then finally your boss needs to see you as someone who's supportive and as someone that he can go to take on a tough task when he's got something that people might otherwise be reluctant to do your boss should see you as I can do person idea number three you're willing to have the tough difficult conversations with people when someone's performance requires it you're willing to give them corrective feedback uh, and you know corrective feedback is really important you're not doing them a favor if you avoid helping them if you avoid giving them the feedback that their performance deserves so be willing to take on some conflict be willing to provide that corrective feedback to people when they need if it's tough you got to maintain emotional control your focus needs to be objective and on correcting the problem for the future idea...
