What is ERCP? Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and x-rays to find and treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts.

Routine preoperative ERCP identifies persisting CBD stones but carries risks of complications and may delay definitive care. Selective postoperative ERCP, performed only if a CBD stone is seen on intraoperative cholangiography (IOC), avoids unnecessary ERCP but risks unsuccessful stone extraction.

Preparation for an ERCP Usually you will be asked not to eat or drink for 8 hours and to empty the bladder before the ERCP. You will be asked to remove clothing, jewellery, glasses and any other objects that may be in the x-ray field and may interfere with the quality of the x-ray.
If you are an outpatient, you will be given a pre assessment appointment to come and see a specialist nurse 1- 2 days before your ERCP procedure. They will explain the procedure and discuss the risks and possible complications.
