Definition, description and locations Saprolite (from Greek σαπρος (sapros) = putrid + λιθος (lithos) = rock) is a chemically weathered rock (literally, it means "rotten rock").
Saprolite is a very highly weathered to moderately weathered rock, easily broken, but retains rock fabric. Saprock is a slightly weathered rock which cannot be broken in the hand and retains rock fabric. On the other hand, the fresh rock horizon shows no signs of weathering.
