What is the M60 in real life?
The M60 is a belt-fed machine gun that fires the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge (similar to . 308 Winchester), which is commonly used in larger rifles, such as the M14. It is generally used as a crew-served weapon and operated by a team of two or three individuals.
Why was the M60 hated?
It was also relatively roomy and reliable. On the downside, the M60 was on the high side (in terms of height) made worse by an extra covered cupola for a turreted machinegun. This made them relatively easy to target on the battlefield. The other issue was the placement of hydraulics for internal mechanical operation.
Why did we stop using the M60?
Because the M60s in inventory were seriously worn out and needed replaced. The Army at this time began fielding M240s as coax guns on M1s and M2s. This was an opportunity to purefleet the machine-gun inventory with M240s, which greatly simplified logistics (and M240s are much more reliable). So the M60 was replaced.
What was the problem with the M60?
The single most common complaint was that the M60 was unreliable in extreme conditions and prone to jamming and other malfunctions during heavy firing, especially when it was dirty.

Did soldiers like the M60?
While the M60 was loved for its ability to be carried by a single soldier, the gun still weighed a back-breaking 30 pounds when loaded with a standard 100-round contact belt. It was also prone to malfunctions. The wet and dirty conditions of the Vietnamese hinterlands frequently caused the M60 to jam.
