Known as James County, it was a small sliver of a county east of Hamilton and west of Bradley. Formed after the Civil War, it was done away with after World War I and is today known as the “Lost County of Tennessee.”
History: Cannon County was established by the Tennessee State Legislature on Jan. 31, 1836. It was formed from portions of Rutherford, Smith, Wilson, and Warren counties and was named for Tennessee Governor Newton Cannon.

During the Civil War Cannon County residents raised seven infantry companies for the Confederacy. Union soldiers also came from the county; most served in the Fifth Tennessee Cavalry, which was largely based in Liberty in adjacent DeKalb County.
