We also listed an initial listing of the top 200. This is a new step towards the objective of having a database that will be continually updated. When can we expect this? The web indexes should be coming soon... but not quite yet. The list is now up to the second and third pages of the OCR text files, which is a long way from finishing up for OCR itself. We're now working on creating our own database by hand, but to make it the right size and quality will take some time. What are some things you wish you knew before you started the competition? To write a search engine, you have got to be pretty good at math, and you need to be really interested in things. I wish I'd heard of the Web2.0 movement first. In the last couple of years my knowledge in this area has evolved tremendously thanks to the excellent book on the subject, Web 2.0: The Next Revolution in Web Search by John Origin and James Cox. Also, the Web Search Challenge, which was a competition organized jointly by OSC and Web world, made for some interesting discussion. There were a couple of sites which were not very well suited to the competition, but these have since been fixed. A good way is through my own website, at. But I would point out that any web page is just a collection of HTML (HTML is the markup language used to make up web pages — the stuff between the <script> and </script> tags). HTML code in the first place comes from the user's browser, not the compiler. If you make changes to something that is not an HTML script, your browser will display a warning. So if you get stuck and say, “I don't know what you meant by <some HTML>, the compiler will tell you”, then just run the browser and look on the home page, the top of the page, and inside the headings (the text in the HTML code that appears when you type the word you are looking for) to see what that particular section of the page is. When it says “HTML is a markup language” it means that your site is designed to be converted by your browser into an HTML format, rather than a plain text language. What can I do to make my site better for search engines? That's a good question.
