This initiative is designed to foster a love of literature while keeping young minds engaged during the summer months. Participating is simple — children just need to read 12 books of their choice between June 1 and September 5 and submit their completed form to receive a personalized certificate and a small prize.
Borrow books and get reading! Children then choose the books they want to read, recording what they have read along the way. For every book read, children will collect stickers to complete their Story Garden scene. Every child who completes the challenge, by reading 6 library books, receives a medal and certificate.
You can also sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge online and then visit the library to collect your joining pack. Make sure to tell the librarian that you signed up on the library website. Borrow books, graphic novels, eBooks or audiobooks and get reading!
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program – 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten.
To complete a challenge, you need to read 6 books over 3 visits (Book Bingo, 3 books, over 3 visits). At each local library, all finishers of each challenge will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win one of our main prizes.
There are 52 weeks in a year, meaning you need to read about two books a week if you want to read 100 books in the year. This amounts to an average of 3.5 days to read each book. This may sound daunting, but remember, some books will be shorter and only take a day or two to read.
We're calling on all local four to 11-year-olds to take part in the H&F Summer Reading Challenge. All they need to do to complete the challenge is read six books during the school summer break, or by Sunday 14 September.
Children who complete the challenge will receive a medal, a certificate and be entered into a draw to win one of many fantastic prizes.
