WHAT IS THE “BED TAX”? The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) is a tax of 12% of the rent charged to transient guests in hotels/motels, including properties rented through home sharing services like Airbnb, located in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. The TOT is commonly known as a “bed tax”.
Transient Occupancy Tax ( TOT ) is a rental tax that is paid by the guest for short-term rentals within a period of 30 consecutive calendar days or less. It is also known by names such as room tax, a use tax, a tourist tax, or hotel tax.
The revenue this tax generates funds the Oregon Tourism Commission programs. The state lodging tax is currently 1.5 percent of the amount charged for occupancy of transient lodging.
The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) is authorized under the San Joaquin County Ordinance (1197). Under the ordinance, lodging operators in the unincorporated areas of San Joaquin County are required to charge the TOT of eight percent (8%) of the rent charged to any guest staying for a period of less than 30 days.
TOT is expressed as a ratio that reflects the number of units of exports that are needed to buy a single unit of imports. TOT is determined by dividing the price of the exports by the price of the imports and multiplying the number by 100.
