The Androscoggin (Ammoscongon) were an Abenaki people from what are now the U.S. states of Maine and New Hampshire. By the 18th century, they were absorbed by neighboring tribes. Ammoscongan/Androscoggin territory, ca. early 17th century.
The Androscoggin Riverlands State Park lies along the river, north of Auburn. The county is also the site of Poland Spring, the original source of the bottled water brand bearing its name.
Auburn was first settled in 1786 as part of Bakerstown, renamed Poland when it was incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court in 1795. It was then part of Minot, formed from parts of Poland and incorporated in 1802. Auburn would itself be formed from parts of Minot and incorporated on February 24, 1842.
The name “Androscoggin” is among many English variations on the Wabanaki place name, which roughly translates to “place to smoke fish or meat at the falls.” Wabanaki people fished abounding salmon and sturgeon upstream in the spring and harvested corn and beans in the lowlands in late summer.
Name and etymology All Abenaki are Wabanaki, but not all Wabanaki are Abenaki. During the time it existed, the political union went by other names, some shared and some unique to individual members. The Mi'kmaq, Passamaquoddy, and Wolastoqey called it Buduswagan ("convention council").
The most prominent early indigenous tribes in Vermont were the Abénaki and Mahican. The western Abénaki were composed of subdivisions including Sokoki, Missisquoi, and Cowasuck. Most of the indigenous tribes have disappeared from Vermont through warfare, disease, or migration.
Native American peoples have inhabited the land we now call Maine since time immemorial. Today people from the four tribes — the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot — collectively known as the Wabanaki, or “People of the Dawnland” live throughout the state of Maine.
