All commercial vehicles must be registered with the Department of Transportation. Registration plates, tags and receipts are issued through the county clerk in the county in which the owner of the vehicle resides, or in which the vehicle is principally operated.
(a) The tax levied pursuant to Section 40-17-325 is levied on all of the following: (1) Dyed diesel fuel that is used to operate a highway vehicle other than dyed diesel fuel used in city and county vehicles.
(1) An applicant desiring to, and qualified to, obtain Alabama International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) credentials is required to annually submit an Application for License, FORM MV:IFTA-1, and proper remittance to the Alabama Department of Revenue, which may be submitted electronically.
Do local trucks need IFTA? Local trucks operating exclusively within a single jurisdiction typically do not need to file IFTA. IFTA is primarily for commercial vehicles that travel across multiple jurisdictions, such as interstate or international carriers.
Motor carriers with motor vehicles which are operated or caused to be operated wholly within Alabama are exempt from this tax. Any motor carrier meeting the above requirements shall pay an annual fee per vehicle to obtain an IFTA license and identification decals. The fee for the decals is $17 per set.
