Founded in 1892, Oxford University Swimming Club is the university's competitive swimming team. Swimming is one of the few Full Blue sports at Oxford and so has a prestigious status in the sporting scene. OUSC is made up of two competitive teams and a social squad.
Swim meets are exciting events where swimmers get to show off the hours of training they've put in. They do butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle over distances ranging from 50 yards to 1,650.
You might have heard about the 80:20 rule where 20% of things get you 80% of the results. In swimming I find that is usually body position. If you want to improve your swimming a lot of times the 20% of things that you can do comes down to body position.
A swimmer may not pull on the lane rope. With the exception of Freestyle, once a swimmer has started a length, he/she may not stand on the bottom of the pool or hang on the lane rope prior to completing that length with a legal touch as this requires that they break the body position and/or other stroke rules.
Teams are awarded place points for 1st through 5th place times in individual events, and for 1st or 2nd place times in relay events. But swimmers who do not place in the top five (or even the top 30!) can still help their team by improving on their own personal best times.
Each race is called an “event” which are ordered and numbered. Each event will have a series of “heats” (races) within each event. Heats will have 8-10 swimmers in each, which are seeded (organized) by swimmer's times (slowest to fastest). Ribbons will be awarded for the 1st through 8th place of each heat.
