How to Fill out a Basic IV Saline Lock:

01
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before starting the procedure to maintain hygiene.
02
Gather the necessary supplies, which typically include an IV catheter, a saline lock (also called a flush device or saline flush), an alcohol swab, sterile gloves, and an adhesive dressing.
03
Select an appropriate site for the IV saline lock. Common sites are the back of the hand, forearm, or upper arm. Ensure the chosen site is clean, intact, and easily accessible.
04
Put on sterile gloves to prevent the introduction of bacteria or other contaminants into the insertion site.
05
Cleanse the insertion site with an alcohol swab using a circular motion. Allow it to air dry or dry it gently with a sterile gauze pad.
06
Once the site is dry, remove the cap from the saline lock and hold it firmly. Insert the IV catheter into the chosen site at a 15 to 30-degree angle, bevel up.
07
Advance the catheter slowly and smoothly until you observe a flashback of blood into the catheter.
08
Once the flashback is seen, hold the catheter securely, and advance the cannula until the hub is close to the insertion site.
09
Keep the catheter secure and remove the stylet or needle, leaving the IV catheter in place. Be cautious not to dislodge or reposition the catheter during this step.
10
Attach a saline lock or flush device to the hub of the catheter. Ensure a secure connection to avoid any leakage.
11
Flush the saline lock with a small amount of normal saline solution to ensure patency. Gently push the saline into the lock while observing for any resistance or swelling.
12
Once the saline lock is flushed, ensure that the catheter is properly secured to the skin using an adhesive dressing.
