Each program has its own coaching requirements, but basic requirements set forth by Learn to Skate USA® include a Learn to Skate USA® instructor membership, background check and completion of the U.S. Center for SafeSport's online SafeSport™ Training for all instructors over the age of 18.
Senior: At least 17 years old. Junior Singles: At least 13 years old and less than 19 years old. Junior Pairs: At least 13 years old and less than 21 years old (women) or 23 years old (men). A maximum age gap of 7 years is allowed between partners.
Skaters may qualify for the national championships by competing at either the Pacific Coast Sectional Finals, Eastern Sectional Finals, Midwestern Sectional Finals, U.S. Ice Dance Finals, or U.S. Pairs Finals.
Structure Overview. The adult sectional championships are held in March in the Eastern, Midwestern and Pacific Coast sections. The top four skaters from each level advance to compete in their corresponding event at the U.S. Adult Championships, held in April.
Adult singles and skating skills tests are divided into eight levels: pre-bronze, bronze, silver, gold, Adult intermediate, Adult novice, Adult junior and Adult senior. The standard free skate test structure is comprised of eight levels ranging from pre-preliminary to senior.
The regions are New England, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, Upper Great Lakes, Eastern Great Lakes, Southwestern, Northwest Pacific, Central Pacific, and Southwest Pacific.
The top 4 competitors in each division advance to Sectionals. The top 4 competitors from each division at Sectionals advance to Nationals. Juvenile and Intermediate Pairs and Dance skaters enter directly into their appropriate Sectional event, then the top 4 move on to Nationals.
The National Qualifying Series (NQS) is a series of official U.S. Figure Skating approved competitions hosted individually by member clubs nationwide that are held in a standard format and in which athletes earn a score.
