The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) was first used to enrich uranium for military reactors and the nation's nuclear weapons program. Later the PGDP was used to supply enriched uranium for commercial power plants.
The community was incorporated in 1830. Paducah thrived due to its port facilities along the waterways that were used by steamboats. A factory that manufactured red bricks was established and a foundry for making rail and locomotive components was built, ultimately contributing to a river and rail industrial economy.
(1) Officially named the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), the plant began enriching uranium in September of 1952. By November of 1952 the first product was shipped to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Employment has ranged from 1,200 to 2,200 people during the 60 years of continuous operation.
The plant is located on a 3,556-acre DOE site, of which approximately 750 acres are within the fenced security area. The PGDP footprint has more than 500 facilities, 19 miles of roadway, and 5 miles of fence. The plant has its own water treatment plant, post office, and medical facility.
