The voter's public key token can also be used to vote on behalf of their identification number. When the voter goes to cast a vote, they simply provide their personal identification number and token on the machine. The number they provide must be in the format used at the polling station. This is so that the machine can verify that the voter has cast a vote. After providing any identification number and token they will have completed any step required by the computer program to vote. 4 The Verification Mechanism This is the final step to voting. The voter is shown a keypad with a number that, if entered incorrectly, will result in a return of one, two or five stars. The voter has four levels of confidence that they have voted correctly. If they choose one star, they proceed to vote again. If they choose two stars, they proceed to vote once more. If they choose five stars, they are shown a confirmation code on the keypad to verify that they have actually cast the correct vote. This code is a random string of bytes. It can only be used when the computer recognizes there is no mismatch between the voter's key token and the public key of the voter they are voting for. If a voter is in possession of a public key that they do not have, the keypad can automatically provide them with one through the use of a public key token with matching public key.
