Alright so in our previous meeting we had talked about the fact that we are lacking in literacy instruction within sixth grade and technically within our building, so I found this article because professional learning is appropriate in this situation from an author called Karl Najib because writing matters improving student writing in our schools, so we had developed a plan for helping that literacy instruction grow within our writing program at Mill Creek so what I am wanting from you is some feedback on this article when writing is assigned versus when writing is taught and what I've given you time to read this so what are your thoughts on what we have going on here how can we implement a plan for helping our students to become better writers within our building and within grades above this I think one of the things that that is challenging for us as sixth grade middle school teachers before we can ever even start implementing these things is taking into consideration that we have our students coming from at least four if not more elementary schools and assessing starting off first assessing where they're at with their writing and then developing a plan for where were going to go from there and what than does that instruction look like in our classrooms these important to model good writing skills first before expecting them to know how to write how can we take teaching writing rather than assigning writing and apply that into our current research unit in our own writing classes since were all from various content areas I'm ELA social studies math and science how can we teach writing effectively even though we don't have that specific background what were some things that we can take back to our classes even tomorrow I think the biggest thing is purpose why are they writing they need to know why they're writing not just here you're going to write for 10 minutes but why what's the purpose and along with that being specific so every time you write you're not focusing on the grammar the spelling the sentence structure the paragraphs you are focusing on one particular skill and then when you're working with the kids whether its in the small group or the whole group you have an opportunity to say okay look for a sentence where this is happening or find the words that are doing this job, and you're writing, so that is being intentional if you look at the back there are some key points from this book that I thought were really fantastic points and I personally liked I think it's the sixth one down effective writing instruction pays attention to both the product and the processes of writing rather than just a timed writing or the processes we care about what's actually happening from those processes and so what I think would be beneficial is for us to begin possibly a book study on this author or planning a literacy plan for our own content areas in terms of taking this writing instruction of anything in it classroom mm-hmm so what are it what would...
