Who can compete? Wheelchair Fencing is open to athletes with a physical impairment. Athletes are required to submit medical reports and meet the minimum impairment criteria in order to compete. Loss of limbs Partial or complete absence of bones or joints due to amputation or deficiency from birth.
Eligibility and classification Athletes who have had a spinal cord injury (quadriplegic and paraplegic), athletes with lower leg amputations, athletes with cerebral palsy and athletes with other physical disabilities which require the use of a wheelchair are all eligible to compete in wheelchair fencing.
An ever-present on the Paralympic sport programme since Rome 1960, Para fencing is governed by the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS).
There are four classes in wheelchair fencing, with the classes having names of 1, 2, 3 and 4. These classes are often combined with the combined classes of Category A and Category B. Class 3 is for paraplegics from D10 to L2, scoring between 5 and 9 points on Type 1 and Type 2 function tests.
Unlike non-disabled fencing, wheelchair fencing is static; the fencers are clamped to the piste using a metal frame. Beyond this, the sport is largely similar to its non-disabled counterpart. Modified swords; foil, epee and sabre, are used to score points on specific areas on the body, depending on the weapon type.
The rules for parafencing include the fixed distance between fencers; the fencing measurement for epee and saber is to the outer elbow and for foil is the inner forearm. The target for foil and saber competitions is exactly the same as for able-bodied competition.
