Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and commonly used in large Enterprise networks. OSPF is a link-state routing protocol providing fast convergence and excellent scalability.
When OSPF adjacency is formed, a router goes through several state changes before it becomes fully adjacent with its neighbor. Those states are defined in the OSPF RFC 2328 , section 10.1. The states are Down, Attempt, Init, 2-Way, Exstart, Exchange, Loading, and Full.
Although OSPF Nonstop Routing (NSR) serves a similar function to OSPF Nonstop Forwarding (NSF), it works differently. With NSF, OSPF on the newly active standby RP initially has no state information. OSPF uses extensions to the OSPF protocol to recover its state from neighboring OSPF devices.
Page 1. Configuring NSF-OSPF. This module describes how to configure Nonstop Forwarding (NSF) in Cisco software to minimize the duration for which a network is unavailable to its users after a switchover. The main objective of NSF is to continue forwarding IP packets following a Route Processor (RP) switchover.
In OSPF, the external routes could be Type 1 or Type 2. Users can create route maps to match either Type 1 or Type 2 and then use the distribute-list in command to filter certain prefixes. Also, route maps can identify internal routes (interarea and intra-area) and then those routes can be filtered.
The OSPF Nonstop Routing feature allows a device with redundant Route Processors (RPs) to maintain its Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) state and adjacencies across planned and unplanned RP switchovers.
Non-stop routing (NSR) is a reliability technology that ensures uninterrupted data transmission during an AMB/SMB switchover. AMB is short for active main board, and SMB for standby main board.

OSPF NSR (Open Shortest Path First Non-Stop Routing) is a feature that allows OSPF routers to continue forwarding packets and maintaining route integrity during a switchover in the routing control plane.
Typically, network operators and administrators of OSPF-enabled routers are required to implement OSPF NSR to ensure continuous routing operations during router failover scenarios.
To fill out OSPF NSR, configure your OSPF routers to enable NSR on each router interface. This is typically done through the router's configuration settings.
The purpose of OSPF NSR is to enhance network reliability and availability by allowing routers to continue operating without interruption during a control plane failover.
Information reported on OSPF NSR includes the routing table, OSPF neighbor states, LSA (Link State Advertisement) database contents, and any relevant OSPF metrics necessary for route calculation.
