How to fill out conservation matting and hinging

Illustration

How to fill out conservation matting and hinging:

01
Start by ensuring you have the necessary supplies, including acid-free mat board, archival hinging tape, and a clean working surface.
02
Lay the artwork or document on the mat board and position it how you want it to be displayed. Make sure to handle the artwork with clean, dry hands or wear clean cotton gloves to avoid transferring any oils or dirt onto the piece.
03
Use a pencil or fine-point pen to lightly mark the position of the corners of the artwork on the mat board. This will serve as a reference when attaching the hinges.
04
Cut two strips of archival hinging tape to the desired length for each hinge. The length will depend on the size of the artwork and personal preference. It's generally recommended to cut the hinges slightly longer than the height or width of the artwork.
05
Apply one strip of the hinging tape to each side of the artwork, aligning the top edge of the tape with the pencil marks made in step 3. Make sure to leave a small portion of the tape extending beyond the artwork to secure it to the mat board.
06
Position the artwork onto the mat board with the hinging tape in place. Press down gently to secure the hinges to the board.
07
If desired, carefully apply a small amount of archival adhesive to the ends of the hinging tape that extend beyond the artwork. This will provide extra stability and prevent them from lifting up.
08
Place the mat board into the frame, making sure it is centered and secure. Attach any backing or spacers as necessary to protect the artwork.
09
Finally, double-check that everything is aligned and secure before hanging or displaying the matted artwork.
